Transl Androl Urol 2014;3(3):320 www.amepc.org/tau Although the concept of ureteral stenting has been around since the 1800s, it was not until the 1960s that the more modern version ureteral stents (at that time referred to as splints) were placed endoscopically. Many of the common problems with ureteral stents (irritative voiding symptoms, hematuria, encrustation, bacterial colonization, etc.) have persisted over the years, but several recent advances may abolish or drastically mitigate these problems. Recent attempts to address problems with bacterial colonization, encrustations, and biofilms have included gel-based hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile, slow-release varnish coatings, and antimicrobial triclosan coatings (1). Unfortunately, many of these advances are not yet clinically available, and those that are, triclosan coated ureteral stents, have fallen out of mainstream clinical practice. Other attempts at addressing the irritative symptoms associated with ureteral stents continue to be an on-going process. The PercuflexTM Helical (Boston Scientific) stent was designed to better conform to the contour of the ureter, but no evidence exists yet regarding decreased stent-related symptoms. Several other novel stent designs are promising, but are still within the clinical trial phase as well. Although the authors include the Allium metal self-expanding ureteral stent within their discussion, at our institution, we have also utilized the metallic ResonanceTM stent (Cook Medical) as a recent advance in ureteral stenting technology. The ability of metal stents to resist compressive forces combined with their approved dwelling time of 1 year is appealing, but the greatest drawback is likely the concern over increased lower urinary tract symptoms. Modern endourological ureteral stents have been in existence for nearly 50 years, and while several recent advances have taken place in ureteral stent technology which offer the promise increased comfort with decreased encrustation, unfortunately many of the latest designs are still within human clinical trial phases and their true utility is yet to be determined.

Advances in ureteral stents

Ureteral stents are commonly used in urology. Every urologist is familiar with the problems that are associated with stents including infection, encrustation, and bothersome symptoms. These problems limit and affect the use of ureteral stents which are necessary, even in light of the problems they can cause. New designs such as a helically cut ureteral stent which is designed to stretch and con...

Self-expanding metallic ureteral stents for treatment of ureteral stenosis after kidney transplantation.

The incidence of post-renal transplantation ureteral stenosis ranges from 2%-12%. Because the role of self-expanding ureteral metallic stents for its treatment has been scarcely reported, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Nitinol stents. Eleven ureteral stenoses in patients with chronic graft dysfunction (8 cases) or high surgical risk (3 cases) were treated by antegrade per...

Self-expanding metallic stent in the treatment of ureteral obstruction after renal transplantation.

Ureteral obstruction is a complication arising in 1-10% of all cases of renal transplantation [1,2]. As a result of the advances in interventionist radiology and endourological techniques, it is now possible to treat this type of lesion by means of percutaneous nephrostomy followed by dilatation with an angioplasty balloon and transient insertion of a double-J pyelovesical stent [3]. The long-t...

A new self-expanding, large-caliber ureteral stent: results of a multicenter experience.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ureteral strictures (US) can be a recurrent chronic illness that leads to severe side effects and poor quality of life. Several options to treat US exist, including repeated dilations, stents, minimally invasive reconstructive surgeries, and urinary diversion or nephrectomy. Placement of an ureteral stent is a good minimally invasive option but has major limitations, such...

Management of Forgotten Ureteral Stents

which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. We read with great interest the study reported by Ra-bani (1). The author reported their experiences in endo-scopic management of forgotten ureteral stents with large burden stone encrustation. As the author stated, ureteral stents are widely used in urology practices. How...
